High Reliability Power Supplies for Medical Applications

DongAh Elecomm is one of the few manufacturers offering power supplies that meet the stringent requirements of true patient vicinity and medical laboratory applications.

We understand these systems require long development cycles with extended lifetimes of operation and product support.

Below are two examples of medical applications and the power supplies we developed for them. 

Power Supply for Ultrasound Diagnostic System

AC Input and DC Input Power Solution

THE REQUIREMENT: Our customer was developing a next generation Ultrasound Diagnostic System that required an uncommon power solution to enable small size and mobility- the power solution needed to run on an AC Connection and from internal batteries to allow mobility. DongAh developed a two-part power system to meet the challenging electrical and mechanical requirements.

AC INPUT POWER SYSTEM: An Isolation Transformer to provide 10 Amps of clean and safe AC Power with -48VDC and +12VDC Outputs. A complete suite of control circuits are included for battery charging, system cooling and over voltage / over current / over temperature protection. Front Panel AC Inlet, on/off switch and six LEDs for visual indication of system status and field utilization.

DC INPUT POWER SYSTEM:Drawing -48 VDC input power from either the AC Power System or Batteries, this advanced power system provides 15 Programmable and Sequenced DC Outputs. The output voltages are filtered to reduce ripple, noise, and EMI/RFI, improving our customer’s ability to provide accurate, high resolution images.

DELIVERABLES: Our customer receives a complete power system designed to fit their specific application that is qualified to International Medical Safety Standards, meets Class B EMI/RFI Standards and designed for rugged ability in a mobile cart that may experience high amounts of shock and vibration.

Power Supply for Angiography System

AC Input Power Solution

THE REQUIREMENT:  Our customer was designing their next generation Angiograph System and was far along in their design with a brand-name power supply manufacturer when they realized they would need some modifications to the supply. The brand-name p/s provided Universal AC Input with Dual outputs. The primary change needed was to move all connections to one side of the supply and use quick-disconnect type of connectors.

THE SOLUTION: DongAh quickly assessed the requirement and delivered 10 prototypes for less than $5,000 while the brand-name manufacturer was still defining their NRE Charges of more than $30,000. DongAh’s power solution provided other substantial advantages including Active Power Factor Correction for reduced Harmonic Emissions, a 10% gain in operational efficiency and RoHS Compliance with reduced production pricing and lead times as well.

DC INPUT POWER SYSTEM: Drawing -48 VDC input power from either the AC Power System or Batteries, this advanced power system provides 15 Programmable and Sequenced DC Outputs. The output voltages are filtered to reduce ripple, noise, and EMI/RFI, improving our customer’s ability to provide accurate, high resolution images.

DELIVERABLES: Our customer receives a simple power solution modified to fit their specific application requirements. The solution is qualified to International Safety Standards and meets Class B EMI/RFI Standards. Our customer benefits from a higher level of service, an improved power solution with substantially reduced design costs, production costs and manufacturing lead times.
